What is AgTech?

AgTech includes technology such as:

  • drones
  • sensors
  • IoT networks (internet of things)
  • more accurate weather forecasting
  • automation of irrigation and environmental control
  • use of intelligent software for yield prediction, pest control, and quality management
  • use of artificial intelligence to improve any aspect of the supply chain from production, to traceability, to shipment and inventory management
  • mobile processing of farm data

What Is the History of Ag-Tech

Historically agriculture is one of the great innovations in human history. It has allowed the human population to grow exponentially over the past several thousand years of history. Around 10,000 BC, during the Neolithic revolution humans shifted from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a sedentary farming lifestyle.

In the 1800s, new patterns of crop rotation and livestock management ushered in the agricultural revolution. In the 1900's the machine revolution allowed for many previously manual tasks to be accomplished by machines, both in the field and during the harvesting, packaging, and supply chain process.

What does the Future of Ag Tech Look Like?

The future of AgTech will focus on th major problems facing agriculture in the 2020's, 2030's and beyond. These major challenges include:

  • climate change, producing consistently given changing climate conditions
  • the cost of labor, automation solutions to mechanize agricultural tasks formerly done by humans, such as harvesting
  • food safety, using new methods to ensure that food is safe when made for consumers, on example of this initiative being traceability
  • yield, producing more to meet a growing population

Although the article above is not an exhaustive list of challenges, benefits, and components of agricultural technology, this is a consolidated summary.
