This article details Verde Vertical Farms, a new company focused on vertical farming of leafy greens in Chile.
What is the origin story of Verde Vertical Farms?
Alberto: Started the company April 2022, learned about vertical farms during a job as a grower in vertical gardening in Chile. Used refurbished container to develop his farm. Spent approximately $18,000 to develop this container to grow almost 3000 units of a month. I chose to grow Basil and Lettuce because they seemed to compliment each other well and were crops I could handle on my own.
What are some of the biggest challenges facing Verde Vertical Farms in the future?
Alberto: My Biggest challenge was building the structure p, which took most of my time, a lot of hands on labor. By growing lettuce and basil I have had to learn how to ensure these crops are properly cared for despite my operation size. It’s not as complicated as everyone thinks, and the plants are smart and grateful for care.
What is unique about Verde Vertical Farms compared to competitors? How do you measure the impact of your company so far? (Revenue, Employees, Customer Quantity, Production Volume) etc?
Alberto: As the 2nd organization /person in Chile to start a vertical garden grow operation, I have the unique experience that has allowed me to learn the ins and outs of growing in areas that may lack the necessary resources to do year around. In the southern region of Chile where I reside, the conditions are dark and rainy, which leaves a short growing season, which has been a major issue when using normal growing methods. Our container provides ideal conditions that allow Alberto to grow Year round, Verde Vertical Farms can grow 3000 units per month (Basil or lettuce).
Nowadays it is only me working on the farm.
What have you learned that you wish you knew when you joined or started the company?
Loved to have known more about varieties of greens. Basil grows fast and beautifully, grows butterheads pretty well. My understanding of varieties could have made my operation more efficient in the early stages.
