This interview details Value Carbon, an Innovator in carbon handling, re-use, and storage company based in the Netherlands. The interview is with Rolf Bakker, Business Development Manager at Value Carbon.
The Value Group unites two innovative sister companies, drawing upon the strengths of Value Maritime and the expertise of Value Carbon. Together, they are dedicated to the ambitious goal of decarbonizing both the shipping and industrial sectors.
Initially launched as Value Maritime, we introduced a cutting-edge, third-generation exhaust gas filter tailored for shipowners. Over time, we expanded our offerings to include a Carbon Capture module, providing a comprehensive suite of solutions for our clients. At the end of 2023, we will have 50 ships sailing with our Filtree unit of which 25 will have carbon capture modules
Our commitment to Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) extends across the entire value chain, encompassing capturing, handling, logistics, and offtake. In our latest stride, we've established Value Carbon as a dedicated entity for all land-based activities.
Value Carbon is a frontrunner in addressing the full spectrum of the carbon capture process. From meticulous handling and logistics to diverse outlets, we cover it all. Our standout solution lies in facilitating the utilization of captured carbon in greenhouses, capitalizing on the substantial demand for CO2 in the photosynthesis process, particularly in North-Western Europe.
Recognizing the challenges faced by the greenhouse industry, which heavily relies on Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems for electricity, heat, and CO2 production, Value Carbon provides an alternative. By supplying external CO2 to greenhouses, we offer a compelling solution to sidestep the use of gas-burning CHPs, presenting a sustainable approach to reusing captured carbon. Furthermore, our approach enables greenhouse owners to optimize the use of carbon in their growth processes.
Next year VC will be introducing an additional product, a catch-and-release system. With this innovative solution, greenhouse owners can capture carbon from their Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems, store it, and subsequently, at their discretion, reuse it within their greenhouses.
In essence, our focus on the hard-to-abate greenhouse sector exemplifies our commitment to comprehensive carbon management, ensuring that businesses can thrive sustainably in an evolving landscape.
The Carbon Capture Utilization market is at its early stages. There will be many initiatives and applications going forward. It is up to VC to make sure that we recognize interesting opportunities and keep offering low-cost solutions to our customers. When it comes to greenhouses our biggest challenge lies in bringing the cost of handling and logistics down as much as possible.
We pioneer the provision of a comprehensive onboard carbon capture value chain. This empowers VC to deliver carbon to the horticultural sector seamlessly, spanning from the source to the greenhouse. By exercising control over the entire value chain, VC can ensure the provision of high-quality carbon in quantities that align with the increasing demand across numerous locations in the future.
Started 2017 as Value Maritime, rebranded Value Group, and started Value Carbon in 2023, 10 employees (VC), 60 total (VG). First worldwide to offer Onboard Carbon Capture. First proven chain for captured carbon from OCC to greenhouses. The First Certified process expected early 2023. Fifty ships with Filtree by end of 2023. Twenty-five of which have carbon capture module installed. First location Rotterdam. Expanding rapidly to other locations depending on supply of and demand for Captured Carbon.
As previously stated, CO2 is an essential component of greenhouse operations, crucial for the photosynthesis process. External delivery of CO2 allows greenhouse owners to fine-tune the quantity and timing of its application. The utilization of captured carbon not only facilitates responsible practices within the sector but also aligns with environmental considerations.
Concerning costs, it's important to note that they are contingent on various factors, including the expenses associated with capturing, handling, and logistics. As such, providing a precise figure is not feasible. Nevertheless, the delivery cost of captured carbon from our process must be competitive with existing CO2 production. It's worth highlighting again that our process allows for significant optimization of CO2 utilization in greenhouses, maintaining a consistent level of quality.
Moreover, from a sustainability perspective, our process is highly favorable. By capturing and reusing carbon, we contribute to a more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient approach, aligning with sustainable practices in greenhouse operations.
This aligns seamlessly with our process. Utilizing our captured carbon allows greenhouse owners to activate their Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems strategically. They can optimize their CHP usage, activating it only when it's beneficial to produce both heat and/or electricity. This not only enhances efficiency but also contributes to a more sustainable and resource-conscious greenhouse operation.
