This interview details Tunable, a Nanotechnology company developing and making gas sensing solutions based in Norway. The interview is with Tharindu Madduma, Business Development Manager at Tunable.
Tunable was born out of a vision to revolutionize the way industries monitor and analyze gases, leveraging cutting-edge sensor technology. Our founders had been developing the micro-electronic mechanical system (MEMS) chip, a key part of our technology, at the Norwegian research organization SINTEF for many years. Utilizing this technology, the founders established Tunable driven by the shared passion for turning invisible gases into valuable data in 2015.
Recognizing the vast potential of industrial-grade, miniaturized, and cost-effective multi-gas analyzers across various sectors, such as for process control, emission monitoring, and product quality control, we embarked on a journey to create smart, reliable, and versatile gas sensing solutions. Since then, we have commercialized several products, established ourselves in different markets, and gained a large base of customers using our products daily. From measuring and quantifying emissions from large ocean-going vessels, optimizing engines based on combustion gases, monitoring the ripening process of fruits, to detecting rot and mold in fruit and vegetable distribution centers – our solutions give unique and actionable insights.
As Tunable continues to grow and expand into new markets, we are poised to face several challenges. We continuously work closely with customers to secure market penetration and adoption, particularly in industries that are traditionally slow to adopt new technologies. Truly understanding the pain points and needs of our customers is key. With new and disruptive technologies such as ours, it is always important to focus on demonstrating the value of the technology in reducing GHG and improving efficiency, control, and quality.
Working with gas and odors is complex. From sensing the gases, analyzing and linking it for example to the physical state of fresh produce demands technical expertise across various disciplines. We are proud of the knowledge and experience our team has, and we believe we possess a unique combination of skills that enable us to solve complex challenges.
Our multi-gas analyzers and gas sensing solutions are based on infrared spectroscopy. They are designed to be highly sensitive, robust, reliable, and user-friendly, catering to a wide range of applications without the need for extensive maintenance or expertise to use. Our solutions are built on unique and effective technology that enables us to take the accuracy of traditional gas analyzers found in the lab to the field – cost-efficiently and reliably. This flexibility and adaptability make our products suitable for various industries, from agriculture to industrial process control and environmental monitoring.
Tunable also stands out in the market for our advanced Gas Fingerprint Recognition technology, which allows for precise and accurate classification of the product or process state based on infrared spectroscopy and machine learning. This is truly powerful and allows us to decode the hidden information contained in air-borne molecules.
Tunable has seen significant growth since its inception, both in terms of production capabilities and team size. Currently, our team consists of 30 highly skilled professionals from diverse backgrounds, including engineering, machine learning, and business development, all working together to drive innovation and deliver value to our customers. We have scaled our production to meet increasing demand, with plans to further expand our manufacturing capabilities. Our focus on quality and innovation has led to successful commercial installations and pilot projects with customers, demonstrating the effectiveness and reliability of our technology.
In 2024 and beyond, Tunable aims to grow and solidify our position as a leader in gas detection and analysis technology. Our goals include expanding our presence in international markets, forging strategic partnerships, and diversifying our application areas. We are particularly focused on enhancing our technology for use in the fruit and vegetable industry, aiming to significantly reduce food loss and improve quality control in the supply chain.
Additionally, we plan to continue investing in research and development to introduce new features and capabilities, ensuring our products remain at the forefront of technology. Another key objective is to continue to foster a culture of innovation within our team, encouraging the development of groundbreaking solutions that address global challenges.
