How would you describe Tekmara and its technology?

Tekmara was founded, following an unexpected personal loss, as a pivot from finance to environmental conservation, particularly focusing on the ocean. Our technology is centered around creating a sustainable system that generates clean food, water, and power, primarily using wave attenuation devices.

Our innovative approach combines these wave attenuation devices with a comprehensive coastal environmental protection system. This system not only safeguards coastal regions by mitigating wave impacts but also harnesses the ocean's natural resources in a sustainable manner. The technology involves creating a synergistic environment where the energy from waves is converted into usable power, while simultaneously desalinating water and cultivating food.

The cultivation of food is particularly groundbreaking. It occurs on platforms that float on the ocean, using the desalinated water for irrigation. This method is not only sustainable but also highly efficient, reducing the reliance on traditional land-based agricultural resources. By integrating these components, Tekmara's technology addresses critical environmental challenges such as coastal erosion, freshwater scarcity, and sustainable food production.

The inspiration behind Tekmara’s venture was to honor the founder's late friend, a fervent ocean enthusiast, by creating a significant impact on ocean conservation. This venture is not just a business model, but a tribute that blends passion with innovation to protect and nurture the marine environment.

What are the challenges facing Tekmara?

Navigating regulatory landscapes, especially in the U.S., poses a significant challenge due to the slow response of government agencies. Adapting to the ocean's harsh environment is another hurdle, as the cost and complexity of developing technology for marine use are substantially higher compared to terrestrial applications. We have to consider factors like corrosion, pressure, and wave dynamics, which require robust and innovative engineering solutions. The transition of technologies from land to sea requires not only financial investment but also a deep understanding of marine ecosystems and sustainability principles.

How many units are Tekmara planning to build in the near future?

After successfully building 10 units, our next goal is to construct another 10 to show the scalability of our operations. This decision is pivotal for demonstrating the practicality and effectiveness of our systems in different marine environments. The choice of location, whether in Florida or the Bahamas, will depend on various factors including regulatory approval and logistical feasibility. These additional units will allow us to refine our technology further and expand our impact on marine conservation and sustainable production.

What crops are focused on in the indoor growing aspect of Tekmara, and what is the expected production volume?

Our aim is to compete with and surpass the current output of a standard 10 feet by 10 feet vertical farm unit, focusing on a variety of crops. We plan to achieve this with a significantly reduced environmental footprint, owing to our unique method of utilizing natural resources like ocean water and renewable energy. The potential for scalability and cost-effectiveness of our model is high, and we are actively seeking collaborations to broaden our reach. This approach not only promises environmental benefits but also positions us as a potential leader in sustainable agriculture.

What have been some key learnings and surprises in the process of developing Tekmara?

One of the key lessons has been the unpredictability and complexity of navigating city and county regulations. The challenges of integrating diverse technologies into a cohesive ocean-based system have been both demanding and enlightening. The journey from conceptualization in a garage to operational units has been filled with experimentation, adaptation, and innovation, drawing on historical methods and modern technology. These experiences have underscored the importance of resilience and creativity in environmental entrepreneurship.
