This interview details Smart Oasis Farm, an indoor farming company based in the UK. The interview is with Suzanne Tate, Chief Design Officer at Smart Oasis Farm.
Smart Oasis was founded in 2016 by Aleksey Prykhodko. In 2018, he was selected from over 700 companies to participate in the Dubai Future Foundation programme. He introduced Smart Oasis, then a water-collecting technology.
While he was participating in the above programme, he established proof of concept with Dubai Municipality which led to the development of Smart Oasis technology and 4 working prototypes built in his hometown of Kyiv, Ukraine. He demonstrated how his technology works. Upon the completion of his pilot project, he pivoted into AgTech adding a patentable plant watering technology for Aeroponics to his tech stack.
Despite some severe setbacks namely COVID-19 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the current team continued developing Smart Oasis Farm technology, which is now fully operational and is delivering forecasted yields.
Unfortunately, due to the disruption caused by the war, that the country is currently experiencing it is not possible to continue business development, scale up and generate sufficient revenue, if Smart Oasis operates from Ukraine only. Current circumstances do not allow us to establish a production facility to serve growing markets and fulfill future obligations. Our biggest challenge is to have a safe base from which we can operate.
Besides the technical parameters, unique features, and extreme efficiency of our product and bespoke service tailored around food growers' requirements, what is unique is that our farm modules are actually profitable and can guarantee a return on investment.
OUR CORE PRODUCT FEATURES
High performance, superior product that is completely independent of water supply, has a potential to function off-grid, connected to renewable energy sources, and with connectivity enabled.
Self-sufficient, modular, thermally insulated superstructure, powered by a combination of total controlled environment technology and comprehensive aeroponics irrigation, integrated seamlessly within urban and rural landscapes, anywhere on the planet.
Applied high precision during the plant growth cycle, with the ability to improve the taste, colour, and smell of our produce, which enables our produce positioning on the market as top quality, affordable, placed hyper-locally, and close to the consumers.
High level of automation with intensified plant growth, reducing the time from seed to harvest by half on average in comparison to conventional growing methods, providing consistent and predictable yields without the use of harmful chemicals.
Global challenge
3.1 Billion people lack access to healthy and nutritious food.
We have 8 years to end hunger, food insecurity, and all forms of malnutrition as defined by SDGs.
As of now, the world is moving in the wrong direction.
In 2024 we will continue our mission to serve and support local communities, small and medium food growers, burdened to grow the majority of fresh produce globally. Our objective is to make food growers profitable and more resilient to face the impact of climate change in decades to come. Our main task is to bring efficient, sustainable, and commercially viable technology to regions that are in need.
We are the next-generation start-up, with a deep science foundation and a strong commitment to knowledge sharing, involving children and young people in farming of the future. Engaging with institutions will be one of the areas where we would like to focus—making strong connections with existing growers, inspiring and motivating new ones, and continuing our expansion.
Because investing time, money, and energy in regenerative and sustainable food systems means investing into our children's ability to feed themselves in the future.
