This interview details Sendot, an indoor farming company based in the Netherlands. The interview is with Erwin Gräfe, Commercial Manager of Sendot.
What is the origin story of Sendot?
Sendot was started 8 years ago with the idea that in the long run sensors would be the basis of many feedback mechanisms in processes. Many measurement are now done in the lab because there is no adequate sensor-technology while in-situ measurements would improve the control of the process significantly.
One of the founders was owner of a chemical analysis company and had a vast experience in agriculture. The other founder had a long and succesful experience in developing sensors. The starting point for development of sensor technology was the idea that sensors to measure oxygen and pH in substrate and photosynthesis efficiency directly on a plant would give better insights and improve growing strategies in greenhouses.
What are some of the biggest challenges facing Sendot in the future?
As a start/scale-up the Sendot challenge is getting the right people in the enormous field of technologies necessary to develop, produce sensors which can be used by the customers.
What is unique about Sendot compared to competitors?
Sendot is standing side by side with its customers to learn and help the customers in their specific fields. Sendot closes gaps in sensor technology needs in agriculture.
How do you measure the impact of Sendot so far? (Revenue, Employees, Customer Quantity, Production Volume) etc?
All of the above items are relevant. But Customer Quantity gives us most relevant information about product adaption success and the added value when customers buy more.
What have you learned that you wish you knew when you joined or started the company?
That ideas on gaps in sensor technology for agriculture are not the only issue one should cover. Main questions are linked with how to improve a situation once a measurement shows that it should improved, and what should be improved
