What is the origin story of Seasony?

Seasony is founded by three childhood friends Erkan, Servet, and Christopher. Although studying at different universities they stuck together and founded Seasony early into their professional career.

The initial vision was a fully automated vertical farming system, but in 2020 Seasony homed into the robotics company it is today. After a few years of working with vertical farms across the world to design and pilot different solutions, the first product “Watney” came to market in 2022. Watney is the world’s first autonomous mobile robot designed for the unique requirements of the indoor farm. Seasony is today part of the vibrant Danish robotics environment with customers and partners across the world.

What are some of the biggest challenges facing Seasony in the future?

Seasony is disrupting the traditional way of thinking of automation in the indoor farm. Using mobile robots remains an emergent technology, not just in indoor farms, but in all warehouse operations. As described well in the famous book “Crossing the Chasm”, bringing new technology to market is always challenging, even if the technology is superior. However, as the industry continues to mature, the benefits of more flexible and scalable automation become prevalent in the industry – something we can start to see in the customer dialogues we have with the next generation of vertical farms.

What is unique about Seasony compared to competitors?

With the autonomous mobile robot "Watney," we automate core processes in vertical farms and provide growers with valuable data insights – offered in a ‘Robotics-as-a-service' model.

  • By automating repetitive transportation tasks within cultivation rooms, Watney reduces costs by up to 65% and eliminates the need for expensive scissor lifts, conveyor belts or elevator systems.
  • Growers benefit from Watney's on-board sensors and cameras, which enable quick and granular issue identification, saving time and money on crop walks and static sensors.
  • Additionally, Watney serves as an open platform, integrating with third-party technologies through open standards and APIs, offering growers endless possibilities for advanced analytics, harvesting solutions and much more.

What are some goals in 2024 and beyond for Seasony?

For 2024, Seasony is looking into a number of large milestones as a company:

First, we are launching our next iteration of the Watney robot with a higher operational height up to 10m, more powerful motors, increased battery life, improved safety and navigation capabilities.

Second, we will expand our team and partnership network with more people passionate about the mission to bring mobile robotics to indoor farms.

Third, we are increasing our presence in the Middle East to serve the next generation of vertical farms being built in the region.

Lastly, we are expanding our digital services offerings, for example with new image recognition algorithms that use image data captured by Watney to detect early signs of disease or bad germination of seeds.
