This interview details Proponics, an indoor farming company based in the UK. The interview is with Charlie Pearson, Co-Founder of Proponics.
Proponics started as a business venture between me and my brother in 2021. We knew we wanted to start a family business together but hadn’t zeroed in on our focus. Having grown up in rural England as part of a family who grew lots of their own vegetables and produced their own eggs, we were keen to explore different aspects of sustainable living and self-sufficiency, especially now that we both live in urban areas and no longer have access to those means of production.
That's when we discovered hydroponics. Having never heard of it before we took to researching the technology and soon became fascinated and excited with the prospect of being part of the industry. This ultimately transformed into the business you see today as a provider of hydroponics equipment as well as detailed informative articles and videos.
I think hydroponics as a technology and industry is still relatively unknown to the average person. That’s certainly been my experience when discussing what I do with other people. So not just for Proponics but for many other hydroponics businesses I think one of the biggest challenges is spreading and improving the understanding of hydroponics as a practice for the everyday person outside of the industrial and commercial sector.
Our unique quality lies both in our range of knowledge and expertise, as well as our desire to focus on providing a broad range of information for free through our articles and youtube channel.
Starting with our knowledge base, our relatively new discovery of hydroponics gives us the perspective that many people will initially have, being: “Well what is it? How does it work? What do I need?”. Coupled with the years of knowledge gained by the experts who write our articles you end up with a great two pronged approach where I can ask the questions that beginners are curious about and then we can produce content to answer those questions.
As time goes on you obviously become less of a novice so we are able to maintain this question and answer means of information production through our social media, predominantly our YouTube channel where the comments section is an endless source of new questions and ideas to discuss and hopefully provide an answer to.
So currently it’s me and my brother Joe operating the day-to-day of the business, which has been a real dream and goal for us both to work together. Additionally, we have the input of our amazing writers who are hydroponic experts with years of experience working in industry as well as on personal projects.
2024 will see the launch of some new products that will help further bridge that gap between hydroponic practice and the everyday person. Helping home users develop the basic skills to begin their journey into the world of hydroponics.
One element of this will be developing and releasing an online growers’ community containing comprehensive courses for the home grower.
We will also continue developing our YouTube platform and produce more articles with some great high-quality information.
The best way to engage with us here at Proponics is through our socials, you can find us across the board @proponicsuk. Check out the YouTube channel where I host videos that help viewers to learn about hydroponics (as well as some other areas of agriculture) and explore the future of the industry. You can also always contact us directly at support@proponics.co.uk.
