This interview details Origeen, an indoor farming company based in Mexico. The interview is with Jessica Gómez, CEO and Founder of Origeen.
We started with doing and designing a modular system that works like a LEGO called "VPOT" for vertical gardens or green walls. We realize that there are few green spaces in the cities and lots of buildings and walls, so first we wanted to do something about it by adapting to what already exists and somehow returning to nature the spaces that humans have occupied. And second, we wanted to make it easy for people to install their own green walls.
Then in the process of doing validations in our irrigation system, we found out that "VPOT" it's very versatile and functional in irrigation and we can make some changes, so that's how the hydroponic VPOT was invented, being able to also produce food vertically almost everywhere. So right now we are also doing vertical farming and indoors with the same VPOT system.
We are based in México where vertical farming and indoor it's pretty new, so that's one of our challenges but it is also an opportunity for us.
We need to make a lot of noise and let people know about the benefits of growing vertically, like reducing the waste of water while growing food. Also, we need solutions like ours to face the demand for food and food insecurity globally.
We designed a system that can be adapted to different spaces: indoors, outdoors, vertically, and can be installed on walls, structures, and as a wall itself.
Vpot is unique because it's a modular and scalable system that can be used for soil, substrate, and as a hydroponic system with water. From little scales for homes to big scales like greenhouses.
Right now we are in México, but have been to Indoor Ag-Con in Las Vegas, and Indoor Agtech Innovation Summit in New York City presenting Origeen. We did the installation of the first hotel in Tulum Beach, with their own vertical hybrid farming with both: natural and artificial light. A program with the government of GTO in communities of low income using our system to grow different green leafy vegetables.
We are selling our small scale: a hydroponic kit for homes on a market place and we have some projects coming for 2024.
We want to make an impact, especially socially and environmentally, that is our main goal. To be a solution for bringing and producing more food in less space and in a sustainable way.
