What are the latest happenings or updates at Harvest London?

2023 has been a big year for us. In March we announced we had secured funding from our investor, Foresight Group, enabling us to secure a 140,000-square-foot warehouse in South London. We're busy working on the development of the farm (it's a big project) and talking to customers about taking supplies from it when it opens in 2025.

Has anything about your company trajectory changed in the previous 4 months?

We're very much in the scaling-up phase, with lots of work going on behind the scenes on the new farm, new product development, and of course, we're always trying to improve our productivity, efficiency, and quality of our crops. We run a lot of trials, and work closely with our technology partners - the vertical farming sector is still producing loads of innovation. And, of course, we still have to ensure that we're delivering consistently high-quality produce to our current customers.

What are your thoughts on CO2 usage in indoor farms? Do you use CO2 in your operation today?

We don’t currently add additional CO2 to our growth chamber, but the evidence that it increases the yield of certain crops is clear. It’s something to be used when it makes economic and environmental sense.

Energy is a big topic in indoor farming right now. How do you view energy usage and costs at Harvest London? Is your energy mainly from the grid or renewables?

Energy is the biggest question when it comes to the long term success of vertical farming - and we've seen companies struggle when prices spiked recently. Our East London farm is run on 100% renewable electricity from Octopus Energy. The future of the industry is co-location with energy generation, to get a secure supply that's insulated from market fluctuations.
