This article details Nordic Greens, a growing media company based in Denmark. The interview is with Mads Ulrik Pedersen, CEO of Nordic Greens.
Nordic Greens is a family-owned company, originally founded in 1948, making it a 75-year-old company. As the largest producer in Scandinavia, we specialize in lettuce and tomatoes, alongside other crops such as peppers. Our journey of growth continues, marked by plans for more production facilities and the recent launch of a solar power project on our property.
At Nordic Greens, technology has always been a cornerstone. We were one of the first companies to trial tomato-picking robots, and we are now nearing the completion of a new lettuce-growing factory. Our commitment to sustainable practices is evident in our use of fewer pesticides; in fact, we have been pesticide-free since 1995.
The industry faces its share of challenges, but success is attainable with the right technology. We believe the future of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) lies in the integration of vertical farming technologies into greenhouses. This hybrid approach promises to enhance efficiency by combining the benefits of natural light in greenhouses with the control offered by vertical farming.
Implementing new technology poses one of our biggest challenges. The process can be time-consuming and complex, particularly with pioneering technologies. We often partner with established technology companies rather than startups, as they tend to offer more reliable development of new technologies, despite the higher risk and reward associated with startups.
Currently, our tomato production spans approximately 40 hectares of indoor growing space. Additionally, our new lettuce project is set to occupy about 4 hectares.
We are actively exploring cutting-edge technology, including the use of cameras and AI to monitor diseases within our farms. Looking to the future, our expansion plans include not just Europe but potentially areas outside of Europe as well.
